This Water Sector Status Report covers a period of five years from 2015 to 2020. It consolidates the progress and issues on the components constituting the water sector. The report addresses the challenges and sustainable solutions of water resources management, water supply and sanitation, institutional strengthening and performance monitoring in comprehensive and integrated manners.

The Government through the Ministry of Water implements interventions in the Water Sector within the Water Sector Development Programme (WSDP) which spans for the period of 2006–2025. The programme is implemented in three phases and follows a Sector Wide Approach to Planning (SWAP) with an intention to eliminate overlaps and duplication of efforts in water resources management and development, and the provision of water supply and sanitation services.

Despite its importance to quality of life and development, water in Tanzania is a finite and vulnerable resource being unevenly distributed in space, time, quantity and quality across the country. Tanzania faces a water security crisis in some parts of the country, as water demands exceed available resources.

This report presents key findings from the 2018 School Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Assessment, which was implemented by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and Office of the Chief Government Statistician (OCGS), Zanzibar, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government of the Mainland Tanzania and Ministry of Health – Zanzibar.

The overall objective of these Guidelines is to ensure liquid waste emanating from domestic and commercial sources is handled, treated and disposed off in an environmentally sound manner.
