Tanzania Association Of Environmental Engineers (TAEEs)

Recently, we have experienced shallow, heavy and long lasting rains that are taking place in most of the country but Dar es Salaam has almost taken a lead.

Impacts of climate change

Despite these rains bringing disaster including death almost every year, they have kept changing it’s patterns and intensity each year.
We might be looking this happening and wondering why is happening, but indeed, these are sole indicators of climate change the world is talking about.
From individual to country level, we need to realize this and take action.
Preserving our environment must be a core business every individual has to take including keeping our streams and rivers safe and free from dirty in particular solid wastes. It has come a custom to see heaps of solid wastes floating into these rivers and as a result, they block river cross and opening paths and the impact is over flooding and overflow if these rivers. Water hence flows into our homes, they destroy people’s Properties including lives.

Due to blocked roads, buses can’t town commuters can’t operate easily

It’s time now we take sole action to clean our environment at individual level and the government will do the needful at its discretion.
Charity begins at home and it’s starts with individual and this is where things will change. Everyone has take his role on this.
Let’s continue to plant trees where needed and keep our environment clean.

Training the Maasai community on climate change science
Climate change training in Engikaret

The climate change project has been of importance to the Maasai community in Longido district. the Project was supported by GEF through UNDP and implemented by TAEEs in 3 villages of Engikaret, Kiserian and Ngereyani where about 5345 people benefited from the project.

Project activities included planting of climate resistant tree species to schools (secondary and primary) for easy management and watering and at district headquarter. The project also facilitated community on poultry rearing where about 100 chickens were provided to formed and registered community groups and assisted them to open bank accounts for safe keeping money generated from the project they run.

The project also facilitated through training fabrication of energy cooking stoves to 3 formed groups of 24-26 members in each village and they continue to train others while also building their financial capacity at their own.

Introduction of the problem and implementation status

Engikaret, Kiserian and Ngereyani villages have been suffering from drought for the last 20 years and thereby creating serious dependency on reliefs/aids. The most recent and critical were recorded during 2009/2010 periods when most people lost their livestock, crops dried in the farms leaving them suffering from famine and malnutrition and disorganizing their socio-cultural systems (Nagol, 2010). Other impacts connected to this tragedy includes youth migration, school drop outs and frustrations (Nagol, 2010).

Furthermore, recent research has shown that the Engikaret Village (among others) has water unfit for human consumption due Fluoride contamination. Despite this healthy threatening condition, the same trend of water sharing with animals is being practiced by the neighboring villages Kiserian and Ngereyani thus, increasing the magnitude of the problem.

Realizing the climate change effects coupled with poor environmental management problems in the area, communities have adopted copying/diversification strategies, that include using the plains in a way that is compatible with the wildlife of which they mix livestock and wildlife to share the same pasture land. This denotes an evidence of compatibility in which sharing of common rangeland resources such as water, pasture and salt licks (Nagol, 2010). However, such community led initiatives need to be supported by more knowledgeable and sustainable efforts. Nevertheless, communities have been starving to readjust to coping strategies on having alternative income generation activities, and this calls for immediate action for stakeholders to support this call. It is against this background that the project seeks to support community on creating awareness, building community capacities and introducing other sustainable livelihoods options, which are economically sound and environmentally friendly in the area.

The Community Water Supply and Sanitation Program (CWSSP) has been innovatively planned and implemented in Mtwara through Community Participatory Planning (CPP) approach that has yielded results and can be scaled-up and replicated somewhere. Readmore on WASH impacts Innovation

TAEEs has been engaging in supporting community activities since its establishment. It is well known and clear that alongside constructing physical water and sanitation structures we must provide education on how to protect them. Environmental management, hygiene and sanitation are our main concerns. Villagers we are working with are equipped with appropriate knowledge on how to be able to manage their health, environment, water resources and infrastructures. Read first WASH Newsletter.

Nevertheless, on ensuring that WASH profile is uplifted, TAEEs in collaboration LGAs (Karagwe and Kyerwa) have invested resources (time, manpower and finance) in ensuring that people including institutions (schools)have improved their sanitation facilities and there are good hopes if more efforts will be vested.

Ziara ambayo ilikua haiihusu TAEEs
